from industry to serenity

Nestled in the heart of Somerset, the Quarry once echoed with the sounds of slate being carved from the earth.

Established by 1894, it was part of the region’s thriving slate industry, pulling stone from the ancient Early Carboniferous Doddiscombe Formation.

A small tramway, hidden through a tunnel, once carried slate to the River Tone, where the world beyond awaited. By 1935, the quarry had fallen silent. The slate cutting mill, powered by a waterwheel fed by the river’s flow, spun its last around 1940.

Today, the quarry is something entirely different, and something far more beautiful.

Family-owned and lovingly preserved, the land has surrendered itself back to nature. Lush greenery now blankets the old workings. Trees sway where once there were stone walls, and birdsong has replaced the clatter of tools. Of the quarry itself, nothing remains... except its story.

Over the years, nature slowly reclaimed what was hers. Trees rooted where walls once stood. Wildflowers softened the scars in the stone. The quarry healed itself not with human hands, but with time, patience, and the unstoppable power of life.

about us

Bluebell Quarry, named for the bluebells that blossom in spring and the historic slate quarry located on its premises, was founded by siblings Tim and Louise.

Our vision was to create a tranquil environment where guests can unwind and rejuvenate, offering wellness retreats that combine Tim's hospitality, and expertise in healthy cuisine with Louise’s passion for Yoga, Pilates and Sound Healing.

Since 2021, Tim, along with his family and their dog Boris, have made the quarry their home, transforming the land into a welcoming oasis. They are committed to ensuring that every detail of the experience is carefully crafted for the comfort of their guests.

Inspired by the profound peace and natural beauty of the quarry, we felt a growing desire to share this haven with others. What began as a family retreat blossomed into a space where guests could reconnect with nature, unwind, and create their own cherished memories.

Over time, the land quietly restored itself. Left untouched, nature did what it does best, healing old scars, weaving life back into the landscape, and turning the quarry into a place of renewal. It’s this natural restoration that gives the place its unique, restorative energy.

Every corner of the site has been thoughtfully expanded to offer comfort, tranquility, and a deep sense of belonging, inviting all who visit to slow down and embrace the quiet.

we look forward to welcoming you.
